About Us.
Who We Are.
We are a small group of women, all from a diverse inclusive background, who are all neurodivergent. Some with neurodivergent children, as well. We differ from other organizations because of this. Bigger orgs might have one autistic director, while the rest are neurotypical, and thus can not understand in the way that we do, what being autistic is like, giving us a more well rounded idea of our own needs, and the issues we face.
Knowing what works best for our needs gives us an advantage over other orgs, in our ability to tackle these issues and improve our lives, as well as the lives of others like us.
We aim to remain diverse, and #ActuallyAutistic. Women. Minorities. LGBTQ+. Having actually lived below the poverty line. There is a severe lack of representation of each of these groups in autistic organizations. As a result, each of these groups suffer within our community, due to biases in the healthcare industry, and a lack of thorough understanding when it comes to assistance. There is still a lack of diagnostic testing for female autistic characteristics, which differs from male traits. Due to this, we are far less likely to be diagnosed at an advantageous age, in which to receive appropriate therapies, assistance, training, and teaching. Much of this ceases to be available after the age of 18, which is most often before a female will be diagnosed. It leads to a life of severe hardship. A suicide rate 9x higher than the average. A life span 16-30 years shorter than neurotypicals. Higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and homelessness. What has been being done, is not working. We need more people like us working together to solve the issues from the actual community, and the people who know what we face, better than anyone else.
